See First. Then Paint.
Most people assume that learning painting means mastering a long list of technical skills: color theory, warm and cool, value scales, proportions. While technical skill is important, it can become a barrier to making meaningful progress for a lot of people.
My teaching uses proprietary exercises I’ve developed in my own journey that are designed to help you break through habitual ways of seeing. These exercises are grounded learning to see shape and color more purely to improve your paintings quickly.
Honoring your perception, your unique way of seeing, is the greatest act of self-empowerment. When you cultivate your ability to see, you automatically gain confidence and paint in your own voice.
The Looking Lab is a mentorship in perceptual painting—a space to slow down, observe deeply, and trust what unfolds. It’s not about getting it “right”. It’s about shifting the way you see.
Rething How You Paint
I used to overthink everything—frantically trying to make the painting instead of just looking. The more I let go of trying so hard, the more I saw what was actually there, and the better my paintings got.
When we stop forcing, stop guessing, stop rushing—painting becomes an act of discovery, not just skill.
A Mentorship for Artists Who Want to See Differently
The Looking Lab is for artists who:
✔ Want to loosen their grip on "right" and "wrong" in painting.
✔ Want to trust their eyes—and their instincts—more fully.
✔ Crave a slower, more intentional approach to their work.
Through one-on-one mentorship, you’ll cultivate your unique way of seeing while simultaneously gaining technical skill. Each session is tailored to your individual needs and desires.
I want to help you trust your perceptions, honor your vision, respond intuitively, and paint yourself out of insecurity and doubt.
